When you are creating your brand, you want to let people know who you are, and what your mission is. There are so many different ways that you can express yourself online, but it is important to know how to express yourself the right way.
With that in mind, let’s talk about social body language. It’s a proven fact that almost 93% of communication is based on nonverbal body language (this is in person of course). Did you know that? I’m sure that when you meet someone you immediately can tell whether or not that person is nervous or confident based on their body language, right? So, when thinking about social media, it is important to keep in mind that your business has a social “body language” online too.
How does a business have a social body language you might ask? Well, this is how you interact online without the context of your offline behavior. Think about it – how do people interpret what you’re company is about? Do others look at your site and think, “wow these people mean business”, or do they think more on the side of, “I wonder if these people are actually legit”. Which statement would you prefer to be said about you? I think we both know the answer to that. Developing a body language that you are able to carry through your site is essential to being effective.
Learning how to develop that correct language takes a few steps, but first, you must find your community! You have to connect to people through the human sensors (sight, touch, listening). This means that you should do things that people could actually relate to. What does your site/social presence offer that is appealing to the eye? Something that people could touch – like a book. And something that people can listen to – like a video or podcast.
Businesses don’t have emotions, it’s the humans that do. Don’t let your customers think that they’re talking to a wall – make sure they know they are communicating and interacting with someone just like them!
Now, lets look at the steps that will help you towards maximizing your social brand.
Thought Process
What do people think of your brand? Again, this relates to what I said earlier… do you want someone to take you seriously? Then you gotta show them why they can trust you!
Listening
This is a two-way street folks. Listen to your customers, and they will listen to you. You can’t be successful without interaction.
Voice
What makes your brand different from the rest? Make sure that who you are and what your business is about shines through! Without it, what makes you so special?
Presence
How do people acknowledge your business? What do they tell other people when they see or hear about your brand or visiting your site?
Whether you’re a new business trying to get your name out there, or you already made a name for yourself and you’re just looking for ways to spice things up – look back at these simple steps to help build your brand.
